Height Surgery

Stature lengthening with modern internal techniques

Stature lengthening (also called height surgery or cosmetic limb lengthening) is a specialized procedure that gradually increases leg length using the body’s natural ability to form new bone. It is performed for patients seeking increased height as well as for selected medical indications.

How It Works

A controlled osteotomy (surgical cut) is made in the bone—most commonly the femur (thigh bone), and sometimes the tibia. A motorized internal lengthening nail is inserted. After a short latency period, the nail is lengthened gradually (typically about 1 mm per day) using an external remote control. New bone forms in the gap (distraction osteogenesis). Soft tissues stretch concurrently. Once the desired length is reached, the bone consolidates over the following months.

Typical Goals

Patient Selection

Not everyone is a candidate. Ideal patients are healthy adults who understand the commitment required—surgery, daily lengthening, physical therapy, activity restrictions during the process, and a recovery measured in months. A thorough consultation includes discussion of risks (nerve irritation, joint stiffness, delayed healing, infection, incomplete lengthening), expected timeline, and realistic outcomes. Psychological readiness and realistic expectations are important.

Recovery Overview

This procedure requires significant expertise in limb lengthening techniques. Dr. Butler’s background in complex reconstruction and modern internal devices informs a careful, safety-focused approach.
