Management of infected nonunions and osteomyelitis
Orthopedic infections involving bone (osteomyelitis) or the site of a previous fracture can prevent healing and lead to chronic problems. Infected nonunions are particularly challenging and often require a staged approach.
After infection control, reconstruction may involve bone grafting, bone transport to fill defects, or other techniques to restore length, alignment, and stability. Soft-tissue coverage is addressed when necessary. The process requires close follow-up and patience, but many patients can achieve durable healing and return of function.
