Correction of differences in arm or leg length
Limb length discrepancy (LLD) can result from trauma, infection, congenital conditions, or previous surgery. Differences in leg length may cause gait abnormalities, back pain, joint stress, and functional limitations. Arm length differences can affect reach and daily activities.
Internal lengthening devices allow gradual, controlled lengthening (typically ~1 mm per day) with a remote control. New bone forms in the gap. Physical therapy is essential to maintain joint motion and soft-tissue flexibility throughout the process. The amount of lengthening is individualized based on the discrepancy, soft-tissue tolerance, and patient goals.
